Well, there isn’t necessarily a “best” softener. I would recommend avoiding anything from a big box store. GE might be a name brand but it isn’t in the softener realm.
I personally would search for a unit with a Fleck or Autotrol head. These are the best manufacturers in the business. While most units will have a different brand name, a water softener professional will know who manufacturers their heads.
I would recommend getting some quotes from licensed and insured professionals in your area and find the best unit that will fit your budget that way.
Even if your local municipal water supply is considered "drinkable", it's a good idea to use water filters as it will further purify the drinking water not to mention making it taste better.
